A full-day circular walk, taking in all aspects of the varied scenery of the West Pennines. A climb up to the summit of Great Hill and descent into the picturesque White Coppice is followed by woodland, farmland and riverside routes to return to your starting point. Waterfalls, ruined homesteads / mansions, cricket grounds, quarries, reservoirs and a goit (culvert) are all included.

Starting from Piccadilly on the A675 between Belmont and Abbey Village, this walk first ascends Great Hill (381m) for sensational views of West Lancashire. A gradual descent takes us to White Coppice, a very picturesque location for a cricket ground (pavilion provides refreshments on match-days). A gentle walk along 'The Goit' towards Brinscall is followed by woodland tracks which encounter numerous ruined sites of earlier habitation. A short road section is followed by field / quarry sidepaths to reach Roddlesworth Woods and Reservoirs.

Pleasant paths along Roddlesworth River leads eventually to Hollingshead Hall and its famous Well House, before returning to Piccadilly.

Great route, with lovely views. Excellent for social distancing. The directions were spot on and it was a good mix of scenery.

An exhilarating walk in mixed weather! First part up great hill very treacherous in places. At one point I sank to my thighs in bog. Walk to White Coppice and via Brinskill was drier. Waymark 29 area was easy to get sidetracked - literally. Quite a few wide side paths. Slipper Lowe was a long haul for two pairs of aching knees!

I have to agree. I did this walk today and really enjoyed it. I suspect the early stages would be very boggy in wet weather, but the rest of the walk would be fine. Between 21 & 22 make sure you follow the fence all the way down to the stream as already suggested, but otherwise routefinding was very straight-forward. Just make sure you save some energy for that last uphill slog to Slipper Lowe ;o)

07/02/09 - Fantastic walk even in the icy/snow conditions. Great mix (moor, forest, river etc) in the walk and some fine views. Care needed between points 21 and 22..follow the fenceline of quarry down to the stream and not the footpath on the map. Our compliments to the author - great walk.
