Pickering - Newtondale Halt - Levisham Station - Newbridge - Pickering

This magical linear walk will appeal to all railway enthusiasts as well as ramblers and those who wish to enjoy a little of Britain's industrial heritage. Starting from the picturesque market town of Pickering, you will jump aboard one of the old steam trains, travelling through the moorland and wonderful scenery along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Your destination will be Newtondale Halt, a station which has no access other than by train; a walker's paradise.

You will begin your walk back to Pickering through winding woodland paths alongside stunning meandering streams and rivers. You can take a picnic or refreshment stop on the way at Levisham Station, which really does feel like you are stepping back in time with the old train buildings and watching as a steam train passes by. You continue up into wooded areas and rolling valleys, mostly next to the railway track so you have plenty of photo opportunities to snap one of the beautiful steam trains with the amazing moorland backdrop.

The route back to Pickering crosses the railway track and river at various points, changing the scenery from beautiful forest paths to open fields and through a spectacular wooded setting. As you reach the final leg, you pass by Newbridge and catch a glimpse of all the rolling-stock from the North Yorkshire Moor Railway before finishing by the trout ponds and the car park at Pickering Station.

A really enjoyable walk, lots of variety with fields, woods and valley walking. And of course the added bonus of a steam train ride, with very friendly staff manning the trains. One important point to note - at point 28, the gate you are directed to walk through now has a notice declaring no public access, so the section between the gate at 28 and the gate (now resolutely padlocked) at 30 is technically not for public use. I would suggest it's down to individual walkers whether they chance it or not!
