The walk starts at a retail park in Bury. The first section follows some suburban roads to reach a nature reserve. There then follows a stretch alongside a brook and lodges through the reserve to reach a road. The road is followed to reach an industrial unit. There then follows a short section along a rough track and a setted road to reach a public footpath. The bridleway is followed for about 1.5 kilometres through trees and open land to reach a bridle-path. You cross into Heywood along the path. The bridle-path is followed for about two kilometres before crossing some fields and alongside and under a railway to reach a river. The final section follows the course of the river for a short distance before climbing back through the edge of an industrial area to reach the start point.
The majority of the route is in countryside. This walk covers a variety of environments including the nature reserve. There are also cafes at the Retail Park as well as supermarkets. There are no toilets along the walk although they are available at the beginning and end of the walk. Street names are added for clarity.
