Prestwich Forest, also known as Philips Park Nature Reserve, is made up of several different woodlands and open spaces including Drinkwater Park, Waterdale, Mere Clough, Ox Gap and Philips Park. The walk uses footpaths within all of these areas. The walk starts at the car park for Drinkwater Park in Prestwich, Bury. The first section leaves the car park heading towards an elongated lake (reservoir) which is walked alongside before following well-made paths to reach a fishing lodge. The route continues uphill alongside a stream before climbing through woodland to reach the motorway. After crossing the motorway you continue through an open area and an enclosed path to reach the entrance for Philips Park. The route continues along a road to reach a second footbridge over the motorway. The last 650 metres along this road has no pavement but is a very quite road. There are two gated properties towards the end of this section. The final section goes through the edge of Philips Park to reach the River Irwell. The river is followed back towards the start point through Waterdale and Drinkwater Park again.
