This walk can be split into two sections as follows:-

Section 1. The walk starts in the town of Radcliffe which has easy access for both driving and public transport. It follows part of the disused Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal before crossing fields and a rural lane to reach Withins reservoir. The next section is alongside the reservoir before following a rural lane to reach Elton reservoir. There then follows a walk around the reservoir passing a sailing club.

Section 2. You leave the second reservoir following a lane to reach a residential area. There is a short section through this area to reach a disused railway track. This is followed to reach a viaduct across the River Irwell. The viaduct is not crossed but the walk continues downhill to reach the canal via a lane and bridleway. The canal is then followed back to the start point including the short section in section 1.
