Walk begins beside Rainford Station and begins by following the route of the dismantled Ormskirk to St Helens railtrack, now known as Rainford Linear Park, which provides a green corridor through the village. Upon leaving the park the walk briefly passes through part of Rainford before making its way to open countryside. This middle section offers some good views east towards Billinge Hill and passes the site of a Royal Ordnance Factory Ammunition Holding Depot at Waymark 12, clearly visible as 'horseshoe' on OS map and site of one of the local coalmines. After crossing the dual carriageway the walk crosses more open countryside leading back to the start. Cafe and pub are near Rainford Station for refreshments.
