From the town of Ramsbottom, which has easy access for both driving and public transport, the walk starts with a climb of about 250 metres in just over two and a half kilometres to the heights above Ramsbottom, reaching the highest point (above the quarry). The climb is split into three separate climbs, with level stretches between them.
The first climb leaves the start point using footpaths, crossing the M66 to reach the A56, which is followed for some 300 metres before crossing to start the second climb.
The second climb follows a farm road, footpaths and rural roads to reach the start of the third climb.
The third climb follows an unmade road before climbing up to and above the quarry to reach the highest point.
After passing the highest point the walk is mainly downhill. It drops down past the quarry using a bridleway to reach a rural road. It then runs alongside a stream before a short incline to reach an old church and the A56 again.
After crossing the A56 for a second time the walk passes an old school and a cemetery before crossing the M66 Motorway for a second time. There is then a section through some fields and alongside the River Irwell.
The last section is through the edge of the town following part of the East Lancashire Railway to reach the park and the end of the walk.
There are two sections following the Village Link (see additional information for more details) and a very short section of the Rossendale Way.
Street names are added for GPS users.
