This walk can be split into two sections as follows:-
Section 1) It starts in the town of Ramsbottom which has easy access for both driving and public transport. It starts with two steep climbs up to the heights above Ramsbottom. It then follows a rural lane passing a 'model village' to reach the edge of a residential area. It then follows some footpaths across fields to reach a main road. After crossing the road, it drops down to the village of Summerseat via a rural lane.
Section 2) The second section walks through the edge of the village, across and alongside the River Irwell to reach a wooded area. The edge of the woodland is passed using a footpath to reach the edge of a suburban area. From here the walk drops down towards the river which is followed back to the start point.
Street names added for clarity and GPS users.

The majority of the walk is shown on map 287. WM03 to WM07 are shown on OL21 (South Pennines) and WM07 to WM12 are shown on map 277 (Manchester and Salford).
