Rannerdale Knotts is the smallest fell in the Buttermere Valley and stands at a height of 355m above sea level. Even though it is of insignificant height compared to other mountains in the area like Grasmoor and High Stile, the view is breathtaking, with Crummock Water far below backed by the steep slopes of Mellbreak and over to the south, there is a view of Buttermere and Haystacks as well as the wall of High Stile.

This short little route starts off at the National Trust Car Park in Buttermere and follows a public footpath north-east past High House Crag and Grassgarth Coppice up to the col at the head of Rannerdale. The route turns north-west and follows the spine of Rannerdale Knotts for just over 1km until you reach the summit. There are many places at the top to sit down for a snack and enjoy the remarkable views of this beautiful valley. The descent is quite direct and takes you down a steep constructed path to a bridleway, which gently descends to the road and back to the car park.
