This perfectly flat, circular walk starts from Redcar, passes through Coatham then travels along a dismantled railway line between Warrenby and the edge of Cleveland Golf Course, from where it intersects a quiet minor road that skirts around the perimeter fence of the huge steelworks. The road then passes through an area of sand-dunes at Bran Sands and heads into the narrow spit of land separating Teesmouth from the North Sea, called the South Gare Breakwater. Entry to the lighthouse on the tip of the breakwater is not permitted but there is access to a narrow, grassy or rocky strip on the west side of the breakwater. The return leg back to Redcar is entirely along the shoreline of Coatham Sands.
The part of the outward section of the route that follows the steelworks perimeter fence is, to say the least, featureless and a bit mundane, but it does allow for the walk to be a circular route. The road passes within 100 yards of the monster steam-belching blast furnace and in full flow and close up it really is quite a sight. However if you decide that you would rather miss out on the experience you can always make both the outward and the return legs to and from the South Gare Breakwater along Coatham Sands. This would effectively reduce the length of the walk to 6.4 miles.
