The walk starts from the Rheged Centre near Penrith and is thus easily accessible from the M6 or by buses which go directly to the centre. A short road-walk leads to footpaths to the village of Stainton (starting from here you could do a shorter version of the walk). The walk then crosses quiet pastures with stunning views before dropping to the village of Dacre, with its ancient church, 18th Century inn and castle. From there a long access track with no stiles is followed to Dalemain House (toilets and tea room). A short climb through woodland leads back to Stainton, where the outward route is retraced.
