Robertsbridge has a unique heritage which predates the Domesday census. Battle grew up around the abbey built to commemorate the site where Harold was killed by Duke William of Normandy in 1066. Each has many timber-framed Wealden houses (dating from 11th Century) which are still in use. This route, readily accessible by public transport, links the two villages via the attractive parish of Mountfield, using woodland paths and ancient trackways.
