The route is on the Rothiemurchus Estate. The estate welcomes walkers and cyclists but asks that you stick to published routes which are all well-maintained and signposted. The walk starts and ends at the small car park at Whitewell. The lower part of the walk is quite flat as it follows good paths through the Caledonian Pine Forest, an open forest of mature Scots pines and excellent for walking.

After about 5km the route joins a forest road and rises to Rothiemurchus Lodge which is used by the armed forces. Just beyond the lodge is a small sheltered lochan, which is a good spot for a break. From the lochan a narrow path continues to rise through the heather to meet the path leading into the Lairig Ghru (The Gloomy Pass). Sample the view of the Lairig here before following the newly-reconstructed path down into the forest to rejoin the outward route.

As the path descends, it follows the rim of a deep tree-filled gorge with fine examples of glacial moraines and views over Rothiemurchus.
