Rough Wood - Bentley - Pleck - Walsall - Birchills - Sneyd - Rough Wood
This is a level, circular walk of about ten miles. It passes alongside canals and through woodland, so be prepared for some muddy paths unless it has been dry. The pathways are good and level, so stout shoes should be all that's needed.
Climbing gear is optional! In the absence of hills, interest comes from a variety of other sources. History oozes from many corners but you are spared the exam that might have followed at the end. There's even an opportunity to play an old game with a new twist near the start.
Four hours' walking is all you should need for this, but allow extra time to wander around the delights of Walsall or to explore other points of interest on your way around. There are eight geocache sites along the way and a further half-dozen close to the start. You'll need to visit the official geocache site for the clues to finding them (www.geocaching.com but you'll probably already know that, if that's one of your interests) and plenty of extra time to find them all.
The walk starts from a secluded car park, just off a housing estate. I chose this location because it's free and uncrowded. You'll have the opportunity to extend your walk, to browse Walsall or obtain refreshment, halfway around. Make sure you don't leave any valuables in sight when you leave your car.
