All of the paths on this circular walk are excellent, most of them are surfaced and the short length of delightful rural path along the bank of the ship canal is enclosed in greenery and well used, but this is partly also a town walk. There are two canals in this walk and both have the usual green corridors as you can see from the photo, but they are in a very urban locality. There are the several short streets to walk along such as the old quayside, and the return part will be taking you along the line of the old Runcorn locks, (scheduled for restoration).
This walk is certainly somewhat different from any usual choice of route. Runcorn is not known as an attractive place; in fact, many think it a town that is best avoided. There are no fields on this walk, no cows, no horses - not even a kissing gate. But if you enjoy some variety, there is plenty here to please you - and this is not a walk to be avoided, and it also includes instructions for canal boat users.
It is suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Good for dogs, but they will be on the lead for much of the time. Okay for wheelchairs and buggies but you'll need a helper to manage the curbs and a bumpy footpath; (although you could use the adjacent road).
Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. Slightly off your route there are shops, toilets and a café and there are benches overlooking the river close to Widnes bridge. The pub was re-opened during the covid pandemic and is slowly building up custom in a working man's locality. If you book in advance you should be able to get a good cheap meal with your pint; an excellent finish to a good walk.
