Salmonhutch Circular Walk

The walk starts next to the Crediton railway station on the outskirts of Crediton; it then climbs quite steeply to give panoramic views out over Crediton and across the countryside. Once at the top keep a look out for the St Boniface Church were the cathedra, the bishops throne was keep but then moved to Exeter in 1050, where it was placed in a Saxon minster until a purpose built cathedral could be erected.

The walk then drops down back into the valley below into Salmonhutch were there are 3 large lakes for coarse fishing with a camping site next to the lakes. All this is next to the River Yeo which twist and turns its way down the valley.

The walk takes you along the edge of the River Yeo which twists its way through the fields, watch for kingfishers by the water after the small fish, and there are plenty of rabbits and hares.

The first settlement at Crediton was thought to be 672 AD when Winfrith was believed to be born he was better known as St Boniface. Later in life he was responsible for taking the Christian faith to the Frankish Empire during the 8th century and he is the patron saint of Germany and the Netherlands.

General Sir Redvers Buller of Downes House Crediton led the relief of Mafeking during the Boer War, but is later military career was not a great success. However he was held in high regard by is troops who nicknamed him the “Peoples General”.
