Saltersgate – Fylingdales - Allerston High Moor - Saltersgate

Most walkers when leaving the North York Moors car park at Saltersgate, cross the road to head west and take in the dramatic Hole of Horcum. This walk crosses the conservation moors on the opposite side of the A169. As well as passing the rear of RAF Fylingdales we visit two ancient crosses of the North Yorks Moors, firstly Malo Cross, which has quite a story attached to it. We cross Eller Beck, then use our CRoW rights to join an old shooters' track which takes us to Lilla Howe and Lilla Cross. This is probably the finest historic monument on the North York Moors and marks the grave of Lilla, who saved the life here of King Edwin of Northumbria in 625AD. The views to the North Sea and Scarborough are extensive here and this makes an excellent place to take lunch.

Our walk then returns us through the western side of Langdale Forest. We finish off by passing the strangely formed National Trust hill of Blakey Topping which may be climbed if desired, before returning to Saltersgate. Climbing Blakey Topping will add an additional 1km to this walk and an additional height gain of 70m and takes approximately twenty minutes.
