Sandwood Bay is one of the country's best beaches, no doubt assisted by the fact it is 1-2 hours' walk from the road and as such is not busy. From the crofts at Blairmore, the walk starts by crossing wild moorland (on a good path) before dropping down through the dunes to the sands themselves. Only when you reach the bay itself will you see the impressive Am Buchaille - the sea stack guarding the southern approach to the bay.

This is one of my must do every time I stay in Durness. It's a fairly easy walk over moorland, with a path that is easy to follow. The walk there is worth the first sight you get of the beach, coming down the steep slope from the path towards the sea. It's a stunning beach, with white sand and beautiful clear water. Well worth the effort to get there!
