Sapperton lies at the upper end of the Golden Valley, close to the entrance to the Sapperton Canal Tunnel, which is the fourth longest in the UK. The tunnel is part of the Thames and Severn Canal which connects the two rivers. It is currently disused, but the canal is being restored along the section closer to the River Severn and one day the tunnel itself may be restored to its former glory. The walk passes the tunnel entrance and then follows the canal through the Sapperton Valley, made up of a chain of river meadows, swamps and shady pools of the abandoned canal, which are popular with wildlife including otters, wagtails, dippers and water shrews. The walk then climbs up the side of the valley to the small Cotswold village of Far Oakridge and returns to Sapperton across fields and through woodland in the Bathurst Estate.

We attempted this walk yesterday. It is a fascinating walk with much of interest but it is evident that many changes have taken place since the instructions were compiled. At waypoint 5 we found ourselves emerging into the carpark of the Daneway pub and hence on the 'wrong' side of the canal and the entrance to the path alongside the bridge obscured with vegetation and the signpost toppled and obscured. Without GPS gear and map the return route would have been near impossible to navigate. There was a lack of any clear path, no signposting but a succession of well maintained stiles and gates - if you could find them. From waypoint 19 we succumbed to the temptation of lunch at the Daneway and afterwards followed the outward route back to Sapperton. We will return to this walk in the winter when there is less vegetation and seek to complete it.

Lovely walk in a lovely part of the country. Please note at point 19 there are no 2 x stiles leading onto the road but just a gate now . Other than that all directions are clear and up to date

Beautiful walk in stunning countryside with very little on road walking. Warning for people walking with dogs or small children - the section along the canal(which is about a third of the whole) whilst very lovely is dangerous for off lead dogs or children as there are many empty & deep locks that are not fenced off & are somewhat hidden by undergrowth. Other than this a lovely walk for dogs and all stiles were passable even for a large & ungainly GSD.
