Sapperton lies at the upper end of the Golden Valley, close to the entrance to the Sapperton Canal Tunnel, which is the fourth longest in the UK. The tunnel is part of the Thames and Severn Canal which connects the two rivers. It is currently disused, but the canal is being restored along the section closer to the River Severn and one day the tunnel itself may be restored to its former glory. The walk passes the tunnel entrance and then follows the canal through the Sapperton Valley, made up of a chain of river meadows, swamps and shady pools of the abandoned canal, which are popular with wildlife including otters, wagtails, dippers and water shrews. The walk then climbs up the side of the valley to the small Cotswold village of Far Oakridge and returns to Sapperton across fields and through woodland in the Bathurst Estate.
