This walk leads from the Hertfordshire village of Sarratt to Chenies and back, taking you first down one side and then up the other of the Chess Valley. There are some lovely hill and river views along the way as well as interesting architecture and the possibility of seeing some beautiful birds.

Five excellent pubs can be found en route, as well as the River Chess and several farms. A variety of birds including ducks, swans, geese and herons may be seen. At Mill Farm, barn owls, fancy pheasants and kestrels may be seen, whilst at Valley Farm you can see chickens living in a caravan and the only commercial watercress beds in the Chess area.

Did this lovely walk on a hot July afternoon 5/07/2017. All the stiles have now been replaced by (mostly kissing) gates. In Direction 12 we found the instruction to ‘bear left at this point’ to get to the Red Lion was confusing as there only seemed to be he path down to the lane. Also we could not locate the ‘stile’ into the grazing field in Direction 18 and had to return via Dawes Lane.

Wards Nursery at point 2 vanished a couple of years ago apparently - now an expensive housing estate !! Some confusion along the walk at various points, where stiles seem to now be gates, and visa-versa !! A nice walk on a bright, cold February day (apart from the muddy, boggy bits) - good to see the river in full flow.

Very enjoyable and varied terrain. Great pubs for lunch. Very muddy in February 2007
