This is a great walk of contrasts starting off in the village of Buttermere. The route heads down towards Buttermere Lake and then along a rocky, well-defined path to the spectacular waterfall Scale Force. The lower falls drop about 25ft with the higher drop being about 120ft! It has a tropical feel with moss and ferns growing deep within the rocky ravine.
From here the route takes a sharp turn uphill! A pitched path leads you up to Scale Beck high above the waterfall and along the riverbed to a hanging valley. The route continues uphill along a well-defined path to Lingcomb Edge.
From Lingcomb Edge the route skirts the summit of Red Pike to aim for the higher peak of High Stile first. The view is excellent in all directions and worth a full exploration. From High Stile the route heads back along the ridge to Red Pike for more spectacular views of Crummock Water and the Grasmoor fells.
The descent starts pretty steeply, taking you down a red scree slope to a pitched path above Bleaberry Tarn. The tarn is a quiet, tranquil place and worth a little rest to enjoy this mountain environment. The last part takes you down a pitched path through some woods and to the shore of Buttermere - another place to sit and take in the atmosphere of the Lake District in all its glory.
