With a good car park virtually at the foot of the mountain, there is no walk-in required for this route. The first km provides a gentle start but the next 4km is a continuous climb to the summit. Schiehallion is an isolated peak and so provides an excellent 360-degree panorama as a reward for the climb. The route is very exposed, so go well-prepared for all weather conditions.
The popularity of the mountain has resulted in severe erosion along the line of the path on the northern flank. However in 1999, the John Muir Trust purchased the eastern half of the mountain and has since created an excellent new path along a line that leads directly up the eastern ridge. In November 2004 the new path leads about two-thirds of the way to the summit before disappearing into loose stones and rocks. The trust is also working towards 'healing the scar' and re-establishing the vegetation. Visit the website www.jmt.org for more information about their work.
