This is a linear walk along the Durham Coastal Path with urban walking at the start of the route at Seaham and the end at Hartlepool. The walk travels along this fascinating coastline that appears flat most of the time, but the forays into the many steep, wooded denes that are a unique feature to this part of the north-east coastline actually make the walk profile quite undulating. There are numerous information boards along the route of the coastal path, highlighting the uniqueness of the Durham coast.
The walk starts from Seaham Railway Station and takes a straight-line route along a pleasant sunken path through the town to intersect the Coastal Path at the harbour. The walk makes a small diversion here to view the recently installed statue of a British soldier commemorating the cessation of hostilities at the end of the First World War. A section of pavement-walking then follows before the route leaves the town and heads out onto the open coast. The route along the coast is very easy to follow with the help of wooden waymarked posts located at all of the important changes of direction. Because of the nature of the coastline the route is frequently meandering to follow the cliffline around the bays and coves, as well as passing around or through the many different denes. The main denes in the order they are encountered are, Hawthorn Dene, Fox Holes Dene, Warren House Gill, Whitesides Gill, Blackhills Gill, Limekiln Gill, Denemouth, Blue House Gill, the deep, unnamed dene on the approach to Crimdon Dene Caravan Park and lastly Crimdon Dene, where the Durham Coastal Path ends. From here the walk continues, to pass through Hartlepool Golf Course before entering Hartlepool for a long town walk to the railway station to catch the train back to Seaham.
