A linear walk along the most southerly section of the Tyne and Wear Coastal Path between Seaham and Sunderland, with a visit to a little under a mile of interesting County Durham beach. The walk includes urban walking both at the start and end of the route.
The walk starts from Seaham Railway Station, passes the cricket ground and after a short walk through a wood, emerges past Seaham Hall to arrive at the coast at the northern end of Seaham. The route then travels along the beach for a little under a mile for a temporary detour before rising through Ryhope Dean to intersect the Tyne and Wear Coastal Path. The path then closely hugs the rugged coast as far as it is legal to walk, then turns inland to arrive at the Sunderland suburb of Hendon. From here the walk passes along pavements and surfaced footpaths that lead the walker through the streets of the city as it passes through the well-presented Mowbray Park and Winter Gardens to end at the railway station in the city centre. A short train ride from here returns you to Seaham Station.
