The destination of this linear walk is Lyme Regis, a delightful and truly unspoilt small town and fishing port, with its harbour, The Cobb, featured in 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'. John Fowles, author of the novel on which the film is based, was a resident in Lyme. The route of the walk follows a woodland path through the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve and offers some spectacular views over Lyme Bay and Golden Cap. This is a fairly strenuous, but very rewarding, walk. The route is well-signposted and way-finding is very easy, but the path can be quite uneven in places and there are many flights of steps up and down.

There are refreshment opportunities in Lyme to suit all budgets.

I completed this walk on 16 October. It was challenging but very satisfying - well worth the effort! The 378 Axe Valley bus route from Lyme Regis to Seatton is a good way to get to the start. Once into the Undercliff itself the effort is pretty relentless - there are no straight, flat sections; lots of steps, up and down, twisting and turning as you go. I am really glad I took my trusty walking stick for balance and to help going up and down. It was a dry day but still some muddy sections, so I should think it could be very sticky in wet weather. All that said, don't be put off! It is doable for anybody of reasonable fitness if they take their time, and the experience of dense vegetation, silence and isolation should not be missed.
