We start by heading along a quiet country lane and are soon on a footpath leading us steeply down into the canyon bottom known as the Arroyo de la Ventilla. From here we begin following a footpath beside the river through a cold and damp micro-climate with an enormous variety of flora. There are a couple of tricky bits and a little scrambling here and there. Later we cross the river over stepping-stones and now follow the river in more open and sunny country with very different flora. Crossing an old stone bridge we follow the quiet road for a while before striking off across country on a wide track to reach the main road. Once across we continue on a quiet lane which later becomes a track high above Arriate with the most wonderful vast open country panoramas, with way over to our left the Sierra Hidalga. Now we have a long descent into the village and a wander through its street to call in at a welcoming bar-restaurant before continuing back to the car.
