Sgairneach Mhor is one of four Munros grouped to the west of the Drumochter Summit. When climbed on its own in good weather it is a relatively easy climb on tracks and paths and the summit can be reached in around two hours. Sgairneach Mhor is often combined with the three nearby peaks to make a long, circular route over four Munros; unfortunately this means a 4km walk back along the cycle track. See Walk 6221 for details. The signpost near the start says that Drumochter Pass at 452 metres is the highest point on the UK rail network, so you are almost halfway up the mountain before you start walking. The walk starts on the A9 and follows a vehicle track for 4km, rising into Coire Dhomhain and then climbing quite steeply on a path over grass and heather to reach a ridge leading to the summit. The return route retraces the outward route.
