Shadforth - Thornley - Cassop - Sherburn House - Sherburn

An enjoyable walk through the rolling countryside just to the east of Durham City. The route intersects several former mining villages and passes through a delightful and unique nature reserve.

The route from Shadforth to Thornley is almost entirely through fields. The section between Thornley and Cassop follows a railway path before the walk descends the short but steep hill into the Cassop Vale Nature Reserve, from where the virtually flat route through wooded lanes, fields and along wide, grassy lanes carries on to intersect Sherburn. From Sherburn the walk rises gradually, then descends along lanes and through fields and woods before the final lap along a long, hedged, grassy lane back to Shadforth.
