Save Our Footpaths - get off the beaten track; half of the footpaths on this circular walk are across meadows and not often used, and consequently invisible. However, the return route is along the very popular Sandstone Trail which is much easier to follow. All of the stiles and gates are in good order and there is a wide variety of them, but one of the plank bridges has seen better days. Being mostly fairly level the route is easy walking, except that the Sandstone Trail is likely to be muddy in places in winter or after heavy rain. The sections along the canal are probably the most enjoyable, and instructions for walkers from moored canal boats are included.

This walk is suitable for children, teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. The route is excellent for dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best in winter or after heavy rain, and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. Except at the pub at the start and finish there are no other shops or facilities, except the bench seats at Wharton lock and Bates Mill Bridge. There are picnic tables alongside the canal at the pub which is very popular in summer. There is very little trade in the winter so the opening of the pub may be seasonal. To check the availability, you should enquire in advance. If it's in season you should be able to get a good meal with your pint; an excellent finish to a good walk.
