A very easy to follow varied walk in the fairly level countryside on the eastern outskirts of the beautiful university city of Durham. The route features field- and lane-walking, a railway path and a visit to the glorious old woods on the edge of the city.

This interesting ramble from the outskirts of the village of Sherburn starts with pleasant field-walking that takes you through the hamlet of Sherburn House and is then followed by a long stretch along a pleasant lane that takes you to the outskirts of Bowburn. After a little road-walking the route then offers up another nice section of lane-walking as it reaches the village of Shincliffe. From here the route crosses the River Wear before an enjoyable surfaced lane delivers you to the Great Wood and Maiden Castle Wood, two of the city's oldest woods. After re-crossing the River Wear at the university playing-fields the route briefly keeps company with the river before changing direction to pass through the hamlet of Old Durham. Further lane- and road-walking then takes you past the retail area of Dragonville, a suburb of the city. The final section of the route travels along a long, very pleasant enclosed section of railway path to return to Sherburn through an area of allotments.
