A delightful walk from Shincliffe Village full of interest, featuring magnificent woods, lanes and nature trails. The route also includes the narrow, cobbled streets of historic Durham City as well as the World Heritage sites of Durham Cathedral and Castle.
The walk starts from Shincliffe Village, less than a mile from the centre of Durham City. Great lane and woods walking takes you first of all passed Shincliffe Hall and then past the old Croxdale Hall before the route crosses the ancient Sunderland Bridge at Croxdale. A little pavement walking then delivers you to the excellent Burn Hall Woodland Trust Nature Reserve. After fields, lanes and a little road-walking the route passes through the Durham University campus before entering the historic City with its World Heritage buildings. The walk then leaves the cobbled city streets for a pleasant riverside ramble past the university playing-fields for a return to Shincliffe.
