A nice little circular walk through the rolling hills to the east of Durham City. Field- and lane-walking is a feature of this walk, along with a good smattering of rivers and streams as well as fine views of Durham Cathedral and Castle.

The walk starts from the picturesque village of Shincliffe before rising through fields to intersect and cross the A1(M). The terrain at this point is fairly level, as the walk heads north along lanes and through fields before turning west for an undulating walk through fields, woods and alongside streams to enter the hamlet of Old Durham with its famous cascading gardens. From here the route again levels off to pass through the Durham University playing-fields alongside the River Wear to return to Shincliffe.
