This classic, very easy to follow and almost flat walk explores a three-mile stretch of the River Wear from Shincliffe Wood to the Elvet area of Durham City. The walk from Shincliffe Village initially follows a quiet, hedge-enclosed lane before entering the glorious Shincliffe Wood. The route then intersects and tracks the River Wear downstream past the University playing-fields and on into Durham City before crossing the river to complete the return leg of the walk upstream.
The walk starts from Shincliffe Village and passes the entrance to a very popular Garden Centre and Coffee Shop before entering a glorious ancient wood. The route changes direction as it intersects the River Wear and closely follows the river downstream to pass alongside Durham University playing-fields and continues to reach the Elvet area of Durham City. The walk next crosses the Baths footbridge and starts the return part of the walk upstream with a short diversion through the rarely visited hamlet of Old Durham. The route then returns to the river for a final lap back to Shincliffe Village.
