This walk starts in a beautiful tree-lined village with a 19th Century church and continues along the woods adjoining the River Wear, passing the 18th Century Shincliffe Hall, at times with lovely river views and opportunities to see a variety of wildlife. The route is mainly flat but with a sharp ascent through the woods to reach the old drovers' route and site of an old racecourse. There is a friendly public house at start and end of the walk.
