This is an interesting walk as it takes you beside the old airfield where in the Second World War the American 44th Bomb Group was stationed. B24 Liberators flew their first mission from here in November 1942 and the last flight was in 1945. There were 342 missions, 153 planes lost and 330 enemy planes destroyed. You can fly in an autogyro from here and one was taking off the day we did the walk. The museum at the airfield is planning to expand and if you do this walk on weekends you can have refreshments at the museum, in the summer-time, 9am to 8pm, winter time 9am to the early afternoon or dusk. There are pubs in Shipdham where food can be obtained.

A lovely walk around Shipdham and surrounding area. The colours in the many wild growing areas were immense, beautiful and added much to the walk. A few points to note. The garage at WP1 has been demolished, the plot looks as though its destined for new housing. The airfield and museum are both closed on a permanent basis (November 2023). In essence this make WP7 redundant as when you walk to the left of the old hanger you simply keep walking in a straight line until you reach the old barns at WP8.

Dog friendly except at point 7 where the footpath indicated to the right over a stile with stock fencing. Had to lift old Labrador over the fence which was tricky. Otherwise would have to walk to the left on adjacent field to the track ahead.

At no 7, no white sign, footpath indicates across a stile, no dog access. Had to lift Labrador over fence which was a struggle. Otherwise would have to walk on edge of field to the left of the fence and then join the track near the barn.
