From the working (Sundays and Bank Holidays, after Easter) windmill at Shipley Village you walk to the Knepp Estate, where you are likely to meet a variety of unusual grazing animals (see additional information), onwards to West Grinstead Church and then along the River Adur. Return via fields and the ruins of the old Knepp Castle. From here you can either retrace your steps, or turn off towards the Countryman pub, a little outside Shipley, where good food is to be found.
There is some walking along quiet country roads and a deafening 150 yards along the A24, as well as two crossings of that road, where great care is required.
