Forget the tour buses and explore the best of Sintra by foot. A cheap and easy train ride from Lisbon, this circular walk can combine visits to both the hilltop Moorish Castle and the spectacular Pena Palace comfortably within a day trip from the capital.

First you pass through the town of Sintra via a pleasant botanic garden before climbing the hill to the castle. Have a picnic or visit the cafe and savour the views all around this vantage point. Then continue on to Pena Palace in another stunning hilltop location and explore this fascinating site. The return leg passes through the forested hillside into town to catch the train back, or better still stay longer in Sintra and enjoy its other treasures!
