Southwell has so much history that much has been written about it over many years. The minster alone became the Cathedral of Nottingham in 1884, but there are records of Cardinal Wolsey staying at his palace alongside the minster and King Charles in 1646 spent his last hours of freedom at the Saracen's Head, formerly the King's Arms. The Bramley apple started life in Southwell in 1837 and is reputed to be the best cooking-apple in the world. Lord Byron also lived in Southwell between 1803 and 1808.
The walk starts in the grounds of the minster and ambles around the town allowing views overlooking the minster to be admired en route. I have kept the route in the second half off the footpaths, mainly to enable the views to be admired and give a chance to visit the original well site where the town acquired its name. There are many pubs to visit and as many tea shops in the town. The minster also has an hour-long tour if required.
