An outstanding, fairly flat linear walk from Spennymoor, that passes through great countryside and three picturesque villages on its journey to Durham City, one of the best known medieval cityscapes of Europe. The terrain covered is mainly lanes and fields, except for a little urban walking at the beginning and end of the walk.
From Spennymoor Town Centre the route soon traverses a grassed-over dene before entering a nature reserve. A little field-walking follows before the route passes through Tudhoe Village. Further field- and lane-walking takes the walker past Tudhoe Colliery and onto the duck-pond village of Hett. From here a long series of delightful field- and lane-walking ends with a visit to a wood before intersecting and passing through the charming village of Shincliffe. A nice little section of riverside walking then follows alongside the River Wear, that delivers the walker right into the heart of the city and onto the peninsula where the magnificent Durham Cathedral and Castle are located. The route passes through the cathedral complex before leaving the peninsula along a picturesque riverside path to get to the Durham City Bus Station to catch the bus back to Spennymoor.
