The coastline adjacent to the Lake District often takes second place to the mountains and lakes: unjustifiably so, as this walk shows.

Most descriptions of this popular linear walk are in a southerly direction, so I decided to try it out in the opposite direction. It shares a common start with Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk. The land is owned by the National Trust and St Bees Head clifftops are an RSPB reserve.

Return is by a ten-minute train journey, or parking in Whitehaven and catching a train to St Bees, taking in St Bees Priory on arrival, is a good plan.

Whitehaven is full of history and was once the country's third largest port.
