The estate owned by the Bowes-Lyon family has been in their hands since 1725. It consists of arable and livestock farmland with some ancient woodland. There are Hereford, Sussex and Simmental beef cattle. The garden of the Bury is open by appointment for charity and concerts are held in the house. The Queen Mother was baptised in the church at the start point of the walk. Whitwell has several 18th century houses, both brick and half-timbered. It stands on the River Mimram, where watercress has been produced since Roman times. There are 2 pubs, the Bull and the Maiden's Head. Langley is a hamlet, with a population below 200.
