This route shows Calderdale at its best, from open views over the surrounding countryside to period houses in local villages; from hilltop to valley floor via tracks, country lanes and fields. The area stretches far back into history - a short detour can be made to see Barkisland Hall built in 1638, one of the most beautiful local buildings. The village of Stainland, meaning Stoney Land, is recorded as a township in the Middle Ages.

JUNE 2010: THE FOOTPATH BETWEEN WP5 & THE MILL IS CLOSED WHILE FLOOD DEFENCE SYSTEMS ARE BUILT. EXPECTED TO REOPEN OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER. THERE ARE TWO OBVIOUS MINOR ROAD ALTERNATIVES.

I did this walk on 9 June 2016. The riverside section from Bowers Mill is currently closed due to a landslip. A diversion is necessary along Branch Road. So don't go into the mill complex (WP15) but turn left down the road to eventually take a footpath on the right. Some parts of this route get very overgrown in summer. I would advise against wearing shorts to avoid the stinging nettles.

It's a really nice walk, however not well suited for dogs unless they're small and you can carry them over the stiles at least 5 of which are very dog unfriendly!

A few adjustments are needed to the navigation of this walk. Firstly, at the start of the walk the Red Lion pub is now called The Pub 1885. At section 5 the green metal gate has been replaced with a wooden one and the track round to the left of the farm house no longer has a style at the end (it has horses in with white electric fencing, which you can squeeze down the side of.
