Stanstead Abbots - River Lee - Amwell Nature Reserve - Ware - New River - Great Amwell - Stanstead Abbots

The River Lee is navigable for much of its length and you will pass large numbers of boats on this walk. The Amwell Nature Reserve is very popular with birdwatchers and other people interested in wildlife. It is the home for otters and water voles as well as a huge variety of birds. The New River is not really a river at all, but a conduit carrying water to London from Hertford. It too provides a habitat for water birds. If you wish to follow the New River instead of the Lee on the return leg, you can do this from the end of Waymark 4. For this, do not join the River Lee Path but cross the road and head for Ware Railway Station, taking a path off left just after the station to follow the riverbank.
