North Wiltshire is not full of dramatic walks. But there are attractive ones, buried in the rural landscape. The county is large, with huge areas dedicated to agriculture.

This walk takes you through a typical section. It starts in the unassuming hamlet of Startley. Having walked the road through Startley, you immediately leave behind the little traffic there is and the rest of the walk is on farm tracks and field-paths until you return to Startley. At the time of compiling, the fields were all grass. An excellent feature is that the footpaths stand out well, being well-trodden. At two points it is adjacent to the embankment and viaduct carrying the main line from London to Bristol.

A particularly scenic part is along the bank of the River Avon. The public footpath passes through Angrove Farm. You might see deer.

We enjoyed this walk this morning, but one thing to note is that the fields near Angrove Farm do have cattle in them and in one case fairly aggressive young bulls - which unfortunately we didn’t realise until too late. We ended up legging it across, and my husband unceremoniously boosting me over the barbed wire fence! Still, a good walk and we’ll treat fields with cattle with a bit more caution in future.
