Start from outside Stoke-by-Nayland Church, which stands high on a hill and can be seen from miles around. Follow the Stour Valley Path, then the bank of the River Box to arrive at Thorington Street, a small settlement with an imposing hall and studio. Move on along the edge of a reservoir inhabited by a variety of waterfowl, then stroll through the pleasant landscape of Tendring Hall Park, passing Tendring Hall Farm on the way. For the final leg of the walk use a short section of St Edmund Way, from which you have extensive views in all directions. Finally you arrive back at the church, opposite the grand old Guildhall and flanked by other interesting old buildings. On this walk you pass several old and large farmhouses. NB: Walk 1165 starts and ends at the same point outside the church. It also complements this walk well.

A beautiful and peaceful Stour Valley walk, very well directed, but it took us a good 40 minutes longer than advertised, so I suspect it’s more like 6+ miles than 5. The car park next to the recreation ground is a good option to start. At WM15, cross the road and take the permissive path to reach the concrete track.

Lovely walk, ideal family stroll.Just a few pointers,at the start there is a free car park 50 yards past the church on the right. The church is in School Street, not School Lane At waymark 1 you walk down School Street to the junction, turn left and the village hall is about 100 yards up on the right. At waymark 5,the marker post has gone, and the stile has been replaced with a gate. At waymark 6,the stile has been replaced with a gate. At waymark 7 you need to turn left on the track. At waymark 10,the plaque on the wall is no longer there At waymark 11,the Rose inn,has been converted into a house. At waymark 15 & 16,the concrete track has been replaced with a mud track.
