The walk starts with a very steep climb up to Hay Bluff. The views on the way up will give excuses for stops and after this initial climb, the rest of the walk is undulation, except for the descent from the end of The Cat's Back (Black Hill). Part of the return route follows the Monnow Valley Walk. The National Parks Authority has done a lot of work making up paths along the ridge, hoping to preserve our mountains; please respect this and keep to these paths.

We did this walk in August 2012, the section along the ridge is great, it really is spectacular. However the Monnow Valley Walk section has been very neglected - in most places hard to get along as a walker never mind on horseback - very overgrown and muddy with path worn away. Also the bit where you cross the top of fields is overgrown so you are forced down into the fields but the gates are at the top - and the last field is so overgrown that the waymarker points you through a huge mass of thistles (I guess this may be ok in Winter when everything has died down) so just go into the field and look down just behind to the right and you can go onto the lane a field early and turn left to go along to the next enclosed track. When you later pass into a stock holding paddock, go through and at first keep to the left hand fence before then following the instructions to keep 20 metres from the fence. Worth doing however, good experience!
