This walk can be split into two sections as follows:
Section 1) Outward. In starts in the hamlet of Stone Fold. From Stone Fold the route follows 'The King's Highway' to pass Mitchell's House Reservoirs and up through an abandoned quarry to reach May Road Well just below Great Hameldon.

Section 2) Inward. The inward route returns along the base of Great Hameldon to reach the Rossendale Way. This is followed across Goodshaw Hill before dropping down towards the start point. There then follows a section through two fields, crossing a small stream to reach an equestrian centre. From the centre it is a short walk back to the start.

The walk is a mixture of tarmac roads, country lanes and footpaths. There are three stiles (two with dog gates - Waymarks 07 and 08) and one stone step-stile (Waymark 12) on this walk. The stone step-stile is manageable for a small to medium dog, navigated in the past with a Yorkshire / Jack Russell terrier and a German Pointer. There is an option to use a ladder-stile on the section between Waymarks 11 and 12 if this would be easier.

There are two disused quarries along this walk which are used by scramblers and cyclists. The first is near to the start of Waymark 05 on the left and the second is off to the right of the path between 06 and 07.

There is an option to visit a trig point just off this walk. See Waymark 08 for details.
Although the map is 287 (West Pennine Moors) there is a very small section on map OL21 (South Pennines) as follows: last part of Waymarks 09 to 10, 10 to 12 and first part of 12 to 13.
