The Stourhead Estate, owned by the National Trust, extends to 2,650 acres, and includes Stourhead House and gardens renowned for their glorious Autumn colours and spectacular displays of rhododendrons in Spring, but stunningly beautiful at all times. Stourhead was the home of generations of the Hoare family, who were bankers, until 1946. The walk, on quiet lanes and generally very good woodland paths, explores the Estate without entering the gardens. Members enter the gardens and house free, but entrance fees are payable by non-members. The walk affords some good distant views, and an opportunity to visit Alfred’s Tower which stands atop Kingsettle Hill. The viewing platform at the top of the tower, which has a crenellated parapet and offers a view over the surrounding countryside, is reached by a 205-step spiral staircase.
