From the Cotswold market town of Stow-on-the-Wold this circular walk visits the delightful villages of Broadwell, Donnington and Upper and Lower Swell. Stow is rich in history and character and although we navigate just a few of its roads it is well worth having a good look around if time permits.
The walk begins with an introduction to the town centre, then on to Stow 'wells' which supplied the town's main water until 1937. We visit Broadwell with its attractive village green and on the way to Donnington pass a stone monument commemorating the Battle of Stow in 1646. After descending to Donnington Brewery, nestled beside the River Dikler, we head for the Swells. Lower Swell has some intriguing gardens which can be seen from the road. The next point of interest is the ascent through Netherswell, where you can see Netherswell Manor and an equestrian complex. Along the way are some superb views from paths, tracks and minor roads. Each of the villages visited has its own quintessential Cotswold character. There are some main roads to cross but these are a minor hindrance and vision is generally good.
