Several sections of this walk can be quite muddy so it is recommended that the walk is only done in wellingtons or walking-boots.
This walk starts just off the main route from Oldham to Huddersfield in an area of Oldham called Waterhead, which has easy access for both driving and public transport. The first part of the walk goes up to and alongside a memorial forest. It then continues along rural roads to the hamlet of Scouthead, passing the highest point of the walk, before heading down to Springhead via Austerlands (two villages). From Springhead it heads up towards the second highest point of the walk using a mixture of paths, farm tracks and rural roads. From the second highest point you head down through fields and through some woodland to reach the edge of a housing estate.
The last leg follows the course of the river through open areas, woodland and past industrial areas. It uses paths part of a cycle route and some suburban roads. Some of the paths shown on the map no longer exist and some of the paths are not shown on the map. The last section is approx three kilometres slightly uphill. The majority of this section is the Leesbrook Nature Park (see additional info' for more details).
You pass a number of listed buildings on this walk. See additional information for more details. Street names are included for clarity.
